Teen Therapy (Ages 14 – 17)

Your teen is all over the place.

The attitude changes. The withdrawal. The arguments at home. The calls or emails from school. The shutting down, isolation, or frustration that seems to keep getting worse.

You may feel like you’ve tried everything – conversations, consequences, giving space, setting limits – but nothing seems to fully get through.

It can feel overwhelming watching your teen struggle while not knowing how to help.

What we want you to know is that these behaviors often point to something deeper going on emotionally, socially, or mentally. With the right support, teens can learn healthier ways to communicate, manage emotions, build confidence, and navigate the challenges they are facing.

Let Us Be Your Guide!

We can help your teen identify their feelings, communicate their feelings to others, and learn coping skills. Your child will be able to use these skills in the future when faced with difficulties.

Talking to a teenager can sometimes take an act of Congress. Luckily, we know a few members of Congress, but I’m confident I won’t need them.

Positive Relationships Based on Trust

We are expert at building relationships with teens, allowing us to talk and get real while understanding parents’ fears, worries, and needs.

Teens need a therapist on their side who can be trusted to talk about the hard stuff in their lives (perhaps including tough things with their parents). At the same time, these conversations require a balance that addresses the parents’ genuine concerns.

The art in what we do is to help the teen feel confident that we are not going to betray his or her trust while recognizing that parents need to be a part of the therapy and need access and guidance.

Rather than offer teens a rigid set of rules (as in “I won’t share x, y, or z”), we offer a more profound trust as in, “I’m on your side, but I’m also on your parents’ side.”

Surviving Adolescence Is Better with a Trusted Guide

Our goal is to help your teen communicate their feelings and express their concerns openly. At the same time, we want both parents and their teens to gain insight into how they can effectively interact.

Navigating adolescence is challenging. Let us work with both you and your teen.

What Working Together Looks Like

01

Free Consultation

We meet on a short call, no obligation. You tell me what's going on with your teen. I explain how I can help and answer any questions you have.

02

Awareness & Clarity

We slow things down and look at what's actually happening in real situations: school, home, friendships. Awareness without judgment. They start to see the pattern.

03

Skill Building

They learn practical skills for the situations they actually deal with: managing reactions, communicating better, making decisions in the moment. They learn to respond, not react.

04

Consistency & Confidence

The new patterns start to feel automatic. Less effort, more steadiness, more confidence handling things on their own. Responding becomes who they are.

Frequently Asked Questions

A lot of teens come in skeptical and warm up faster than parents expect. I don't talk down to them, and I don't pretend to have all the answers, which is usually the thing that gets them to actually talk.

You won't get a detailed recap after every session because your teen needs to know what they share stays between us. We'll talk separately about how to support what's being built, and you'll start noticing changes at home.

Most parents start noticing small shifts within the first month or two: quicker recoveries, fewer blowups, and conversations that go differently than they would have a month ago. The bigger changes build from there.

Sessions happen via telehealth throughout California, or in person here in Redding, CA – whichever your teen is more comfortable with.

This page focuses on teens ages 14–17. If your child is younger, see Pre-Teen Therapy (ages 10–13) or Child Behavior Management (ages 8–17).

Session fees are discussed during the free 15-minute consultation call. New Horizons Counseling Services currently accepts both private-pay clients and Partnership HealthPlan of California insurance for eligible clients.
